Project Management Learning Path
Build project management skills from practical fundamentals to PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner, with an accelerated combined course and optional AgilePM, APM and programme management routes.
From project planning to PRINCE2 application
Learn the foundations of planning and delivering projects, build a recognised understanding of PRINCE2 and progress towards applying the method confidently. This flexible pathway brings together ExperTrain's instructor-led project management training and free revision resources.
This is a suggested learning progression, not a compulsory course sequence. PRINCE2 Practitioner examination entry has recognised qualification prerequisites; check the current requirements before booking.
Where should you begin?
Choose an entry point based on your experience and goals. Not everyone needs the introductory course, and there is a combined PRINCE2 option if you prefer a concentrated programme.
Build your project management foundations
Understand how projects are planned, organised and monitored. This is a useful starting point for project coordinators, new managers and professionals taking on project responsibilities.
Project Management Fundamentals
Understand the project lifecycle, scope, stakeholders, scheduling, risk and the day-to-day methods used to deliver successful projects. Ideal for those developing practical project skills before choosing a certification.
- Project planning
- Stakeholder communication
- Risks and controls
Learn a structured PRINCE2 approach
Develop confidence with PRINCE2 Version 7 principles, practices, processes and governance. If you already have substantial general project experience, you may start at this stage.
PRINCE2 Project Management Foundation
Build your understanding of PRINCE2 Version 7 principles, practices, processes, roles and responsibilities. Prepare to use a recognised framework for managing projects.
- PRINCE2 principles
- Roles and processes
- Managing projects
Apply and tailor PRINCE2 in practice
Develop the ability to adapt PRINCE2 to project contexts and make realistic decisions. PeopleCert accepts PRINCE2 Foundation and certain other recognised project management qualifications as Practitioner prerequisites.
PRINCE2 Project Management Practitioner
Progress from knowing the method to applying and adapting PRINCE2 to realistic project situations, making decisions about governance, risk, planning and delivery.
- Applying PRINCE2
- Scenario-based decisions
- Tailoring project controls
Continue in a direction that suits your work
These are separate qualifications or complementary skills routes, rather than mandatory stages. They are not included in the eight-day duration above.

About this Project Management Learning Path
Do I need Project Management Fundamentals before PRINCE2 Foundation?
No. Fundamentals provides practical project management knowledge but is not a formal prerequisite for PRINCE2 Foundation. You can start with PRINCE2 Foundation if you are ready for a structured project management method.
Can I take PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner together?
Yes. ExperTrain offers a five-day combined PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner course. It is an alternative to attending the two separate courses, not an extra step. Check the course page for the current examination arrangements.
Does PRINCE2 Practitioner require the Foundation qualification?
Practitioner requires an accepted prior qualification. PRINCE2 Foundation is one route; certain other project management certifications are also accepted. Check PeopleCert's official Practitioner requirements before scheduling an examination.
Would AgilePM be better than PRINCE2 for my work?
It depends on your role and project environment. PRINCE2 offers structured project governance and management practices, while AgilePM focuses on working iteratively and responding to change. Some roles benefit from both approaches.
Does completing a course automatically award certification?
No. Certifications are awarded by the relevant examination body once you meet its requirements. Review each ExperTrain course page for examinations, materials, prices and booking arrangements.
Can ExperTrain provide private project management training?
Yes. ExperTrain offers instructor-led training for groups and organisations, subject to scheduling and availability. Explore individual course pages or get in touch to discuss a tailored training programme.
