Cyber Security Learning Path
Explore a flexible pathway from IT foundations to network security, threat detection and incident response. Choose your starting point, discover CompTIA training and practise with free quizzes.
From IT foundations to cyber defence
Develop the technical knowledge behind cyber security, then build towards threat detection, monitoring and incident response. This flexible pathway connects ExperTrain's instructor-led CompTIA courses with free revision quizzes and optional specialisms.
This is a recommended skills progression, not a mandatory CompTIA certification sequence. Take the stages you need and check each exam's current requirements before booking.
Where should you begin?
Start where your experience suggests. Earlier stages provide useful background, but you do not need to complete every course before moving forward.
Build your IT foundation
Understand devices, operating systems, networks and troubleshooting before specialising in security. These early stages may be skipped if you already have equivalent experience.
CompTIA Tech+
Get familiar with the terminology, devices, software, networks and security fundamentals that underpin work in technology.
- IT essentials
- Networks and devices
- Basic security
CompTIA A+ Accelerated
Develop practical skills across computer hardware, operating systems, troubleshooting, support and safe working practices.
- Hardware and OS
- Troubleshooting
- Endpoint security
Understand and protect networks
Build the network knowledge and foundational security concepts needed to recognise and reduce cyber threats.
CompTIA Network+
Understand how networks operate and learn to configure, monitor and troubleshoot the infrastructure that security teams need to defend.
- Network concepts
- Connectivity
- Network security
CompTIA Security+
Establish a foundation in threat types, vulnerabilities, identity, secure architecture, governance and incident response.
- Threats and vulnerabilities
- Secure architecture
- Security operations
Develop security analysis skills
Progress towards security operations, continuous monitoring and incident response, with an emphasis on interpreting and acting on evidence.
CompTIA CySA+
Progress into security monitoring, analysing alerts and indicators, vulnerability management, incident investigation and response.
- Threat detection
- Security analysis
- Incident response
Choose a direction that matches your role
After building a solid security foundation, you may prefer to specialise. These are complementary routes, not compulsory stages and they are not included in the five-stage duration above.
CompTIA PenTest+
Explore vulnerability assessment, authorised penetration testing methods, reporting and remediation advice.
Explore CompTIA PenTest+ training →CompTIA SecurityX
Progress towards complex enterprise security architecture, engineering, governance and senior technical responsibilities.
Explore CompTIA SecurityX training →CompTIA SecAI+
Explore how AI affects cyber threats, security operations and the safe use of AI-enabled security capabilities.
Explore CompTIA SecAI+ training →For supporting infrastructure expertise, you could also explore CompTIA Linux+ or CompTIA Cloud+.
About this cyber security pathway
Do I need all five CompTIA certifications?
No. This is an optional progression based on related skills, not a compulsory sequence. For example, someone already confident with IT support and networking may begin at Security+. You can attend individual courses without enrolling on every earlier stage.
Should I take Network+ before Security+?
Networking knowledge is valuable because many security concepts build on how devices, protocols and networks work. Network+ is a useful preparation route, but it is not a compulsory prerequisite for the Security+ exam.
Which courses would suit someone aiming for a security operations centre role?
A strong base in networking and security, followed by CySA+, is a useful route towards junior security analysis and security operations skills. Practical experience and employer-specific tools are also important.
Does completing a training course give me the CompTIA qualification?
No. The official certification is awarded by CompTIA when you meet the relevant examination requirements. Check the individual ExperTrain course page for current course details and whether an exam voucher is included.
Can ExperTrain deliver private training for an IT or security team?
Yes. We offer private instructor-led training for organisations, subject to scheduling and availability. Visit the relevant course page or contact ExperTrain to discuss your team's experience and training objectives.
