CompTIA Network+ and Cisco CCNA are two of the best-known entry-to-intermediate networking certifications, but they are designed for slightly different goals. What is Cisco CCNA?

CCNA stands for Cisco Certified Network Associate. It is an associate-level Cisco certification built around networking fundamentals, network access, IP connectivity, IP services, security fundamentals, automation and programmability.

The current 200-301 CCNA v1.1 exam is available until 2 February 2027. Cisco has announced that CCNA v2.0 will become the active exam from 3 February 2027, with additional emphasis on practical skills, security, AI-related concepts and troubleshooting. For learners studying during 2026, Cisco's guidance is that there is no need to stop preparation for the current v1.1 exam.

CCNA covers many of the same underlying networking concepts as Network+, but it takes them further into implementation. You are expected to understand areas such as:

What is the main difference between Network+ and CCNA?

The simplest distinction is vendor-neutral breadth versus deeper vendor-specific implementation.

Network+ teaches networking concepts in a way that can be applied across different environments. You need to understand what routers, switches, VLANs, wireless networks and common protocols do, how they work together and how to troubleshoot them.

CCNA expects you to understand those concepts too, but it also asks you to work with them in the context of Cisco networking. That includes configuring, verifying and troubleshooting features using Cisco technologies and command-line tools.

Which certification is harder?

For most learners, CCNA is the more demanding certification.

Do you need Network+ before CCNA?

No. Cisco specifies no formal prerequisite for the CCNA exam, and you can study CCNA directly.

However, whether that is the right route depends on your starting point. If terms such as IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, DNS, DHCP, switch, router, VLAN and TCP/UDP are already familiar, you may be comfortable moving directly into CCNA training.

Is Network+ enough to become a network engineer?

Which certification is better for cybersecurity?

Both can provide useful foundations for cybersecurity because security professionals need to understand how networks operate.

Network+ provides broad coverage of secure network design, hardening, authentication, wireless security, segmentation and troubleshooting. This can be an excellent base before progressing to security certifications such as CompTIA Security+.

CCNA covers security fundamentals within a deeper networking context, including ACLs, device hardening, secure administrative access, wireless security and threat-defence concepts.

If your long-term goal is cybersecurity rather than network engineering, Network+ followed by Security+ may provide a very logical route. If your intended security role has a strong network-security or Cisco infrastructure component, CCNA can add considerable value.

Which is better for cloud and data centre careers?

Networking remains essential in cloud and data centre environments, so both certifications can be relevant.

Network+ includes vendor-neutral cloud and data centre networking concepts and gives learners a broad base in connectivity, services, high availability and network architecture.

Which is better for help desk and IT support?

Network+ is usually the more natural match for general IT support because the knowledge is vendor-neutral and directly applicable to diagnosing everyday connectivity problems.

A support technician may need to understand Wi-Fi, IP configuration, DHCP, DNS, VPN access, cabling, network services and basic security without being responsible for configuring enterprise routers and switches.

CCNA can still be valuable, particularly if you want to move from support into a dedicated networking role. It may simply provide more networking depth than is required for many first-line or desktop-support positions.

Which is better for a network administrator?

For someone specifically targeting network administration or network engineering, CCNA is often the stronger long-term choice because it develops deeper routing, switching and configuration skills.
