For many learners, the most sensible route is Security+ first, followed by CySA+ after gaining further practical security experience.

The current Security+ SY0-701 objectives cover general security concepts, threats and vulnerabilities, security architecture, security operations, and security programme management. What does CySA+ cover?
CySA+ focuses on monitoring and defensive analysis, including SIEM, EDR and XDR, threat intelligence, threat hunting, vulnerability scanning and prioritisation, incident response and reporting.
Should you take Security+ before CySA+?
Security+ is not a formal prerequisite for CySA+, but it is a sensible first step for many learners. An experienced security analyst may be able to move directly to CySA+. Someone moving from IT support, infrastructure or networking into cybersecurity will usually benefit from Security+ first.
Which jobs align with each certification?
Security+ can support progression towards junior cybersecurity analyst, security administrator, systems administrator and security support roles. CySA+ is more directly aligned with SOC analyst, cybersecurity analyst, incident response analyst, vulnerability analyst and threat-analysis roles.

If your long-term goal is to become a SOC analyst, both can be useful. Security+ provides the foundation; CySA+ is more directly aligned with day-to-day security operations.
What about the current CySA+ exam version?
CompTIA has introduced a newer CySA+ exam generation while the previous CS0-003 version is being phased out. During 2026, learners may therefore encounter materials for different exam versions.
Before booking, check the current CompTIA exam code and retirement information. If you are beginning from scratch, current-version material is normally the safer choice.
