AWS vs Azure Certification: Which Cloud Path Should You Choose?

AWS and Microsoft Azure certifications can both provide a strong route into cloud computing, but the better path depends mainly on the platform you use now, the roles you want to move into and the technologies used by prospective employers. Choose AWS if your target environment is centred on Amazon Web Services. Choose Azure if you work in a Microsoft-heavy organisation or want roles built around Microsoft Azure.

If you are completely new to cloud computing and have no platform requirement, there is little benefit in trying to learn both at the same time. Start with one platform, build practical experience, then add the other later if your work requires multi-cloud skills.

Both certification ecosystems provide routes from cloud fundamentals into more specialised technical roles. The terminology differs, but the progression is broadly similar.

  • AWS: foundational certifications introduce AWS Cloud concepts, while Associate, Professional and Specialty certifications validate progressively deeper technical skills.
  • Microsoft Azure: Microsoft provides Fundamentals, Associate, Expert and Specialty certifications aligned to roles such as administrator, developer, solutions architect, security engineer and network engineer.

The important question is therefore not simply “Which certification is better?” but “Which certification path best supports the work I want to do?”

Is AWS or Azure certification better?

Neither certification route is universally better. A certification has most value when it is relevant to the systems you actually work with or the jobs you intend to apply for.

AWS certification may be the more logical choice if your organisation already runs workloads on AWS, you want to work with AWS services, or the vacancies you are targeting repeatedly ask for AWS knowledge. Azure certification may be more useful where organisations already rely heavily on Microsoft technologies such as Microsoft 365, Windows Server, Microsoft Entra ID, SQL Server or other Microsoft cloud services.

For someone changing career, it is worth reviewing a representative sample of vacancies for the type of role you want. Look at the cloud platform, certification names and practical skills that employers mention repeatedly. That evidence is more useful than choosing a platform simply because one certification is perceived to be more popular.

How the AWS certification path works

AWS currently organises certifications into Foundational, Associate, Professional and Specialty categories. The AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner is designed to validate an overall understanding of the AWS Cloud without being tied to a particular technical job role.

For people moving into hands-on technical work, the Associate level provides role-focused routes. Examples include AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate for architecture, AWS Certified Developer - Associate for application development and AWS Certified CloudOps Engineer - Associate for deploying, managing and operating AWS workloads.

Experienced AWS professionals can then progress towards Professional certifications such as Solutions Architect or DevOps Engineer, or pursue specialist credentials in areas such as security.

Which cloud certification is best for beginners?

The best choice is usually determined by context:

AWS vs Azure for cloud administrators

For an operations or administration career, both platforms provide clear routes.

On AWS, the current operations-focused certification is AWS Certified CloudOps Engineer - Associate, previously known as AWS Certified SysOps Administrator - Associate. It focuses on deploying, managing and operating AWS workloads, including monitoring, security, networking, business continuity and optimisation.

The AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate validates the ability to design secure, resilient, high-performing and cost-optimised solutions on AWS. AWS recommends practical experience, although candidates with strong existing IT knowledge can use it as an early technical certification.

Cloud security professionals need both security knowledge and a strong understanding of the platform they are protecting.

Someone who already works with Microsoft infrastructure may find Azure terminology, identity and administration easier to relate to. A developer, systems administrator and solutions architect can also have very different experiences because each role interacts with cloud platforms in a different way.

Fundamentals certifications are intended to be accessible to people relatively new to cloud technology. Associate and expert-level certifications become much easier when study is supported by practical work rather than exam preparation alone.

Which certification is better for finding a job?

The most useful certification is the one that matches the technology and responsibilities of the jobs you want.

A certification can help demonstrate structured knowledge, but employers commonly need evidence that you can apply that knowledge. Practical labs, real projects, troubleshooting experience and an understanding of adjacent technologies can therefore matter just as much as the certificate itself.

When planning your route, work backwards from the role. A cloud administrator, developer, architect and security engineer should not all follow the same certification sequence.

Should you learn both AWS and Azure?

Eventually, learning both platforms can be useful, particularly for consultants, architects and engineers working in multi-cloud environments. However, beginners are usually better served by becoming genuinely competent in one platform first.

Many cloud principles transfer between AWS and Azure. You will encounter comparable concepts around virtual networks, compute, object storage, identity, monitoring, databases, serverless services, resilience and cost management. Once those principles are understood on one platform, learning how the second platform implements them becomes easier.

A sensible approach is therefore:

  1. Choose the platform most relevant to your current or target role.
  2. Learn the fundamentals.
  3. Gain hands-on experience.
  4. Progress into a role-based certification.
  5. Add the second cloud platform when there is a genuine business or career reason to do so.

Your answers will usually make the choice much clearer. The objective is not to collect the largest number of badges. It is to build a coherent set of skills that you can apply in real cloud environments.
