What Comes After ITIL Foundation? Choosing Your ITIL Version 5 Pathway

After ITIL Foundation, there is no single compulsory “Practitioner” qualification that everyone takes next. Under ITIL® Version 5, Foundation is the entry point into a range of advanced modules covering product management, service management, experience, strategy, transformation and practical ITIL management practices.
The right next step depends on the work you actually do. A service delivery manager may benefit most from ITIL Service. A product manager may prefer ITIL Product. A customer experience professional could choose ITIL Experience, while senior digital leaders may be better suited to ITIL Strategy. Professionals responsible for organisational change can choose ITIL Transformation.
This guide explains the current ITIL Version 5 progression routes and helps you decide what to study after Foundation.
What comes after ITIL Foundation at a glance?
Once you hold ITIL Foundation Version 5, you can progress into several different areas:
- ITIL Product – for digital product and product lifecycle responsibilities.
- ITIL Service – for service delivery, support, reliability and operational management.
- ITIL Experience – for customer, user and employee experience.
- ITIL Strategy – for digital strategy, leadership and strategic decision-making.
- ITIL Transformation – for organisational change, implementation and transformation.
- ITIL Practice Manager modules – for practical expertise across groups of ITIL management practices.
These modules can also be combined into broader designations such as ITIL Practice Manager, ITIL Managing Professional and ITIL Strategic Leader.
Do you have to take the modules in a particular order?
No. After Foundation, the advanced Version 5 modules do not all have to be completed in one fixed sequence.
You can choose the subject that best matches your responsibilities and career goals. For example, somebody leading a major service transformation could reasonably take ITIL Transformation before Product or Service. A product owner may choose ITIL Product as their first advanced course.
However, if you are working towards one of the formal ITIL designations, you must eventually complete the specific modules required for that designation.
ITIL Product: who should take it?
ITIL Product is designed for people involved in the development and lifecycle management of digital products and services.
It is particularly relevant to:
- product managers
- product owners
- digital delivery professionals
- business analysts
- solution and service designers
- software development teams
- professionals responsible for product improvement
The module looks at the complete product and service lifecycle, including discovering needs, designing solutions, acquiring components, building, transitioning, operating, delivering, supporting and continually improving digital products.
If your role involves deciding what should be built, why it should be built and how it should continue delivering value over time, Product is a strong next step.
ExperTrain offers ITIL® Version 5 Product training with the official examination included.
ITIL Service: who should take it?
ITIL Service focuses more heavily on the delivery, operation, support and improvement of digital services.
It is well suited to:
- service delivery managers
- IT service managers
- service desk and support leaders
- operations professionals
- service owners
- application support teams
- technical teams responsible for service reliability
The course explores how ITIL guidance can be applied throughout the lifecycle to improve service reliability, resilience, support and measurable value.
If your daily responsibilities include incidents, requests, problems, change, support, service quality or operational performance, ITIL Service is likely to be one of the most directly relevant modules after Foundation.
See the ITIL® Version 5 Service course.
ITIL Experience: who should take it?
ITIL Experience focuses on how people perceive and interact with digital products and services.
This makes it particularly useful for:
- customer experience professionals
- service managers
- business relationship managers
- product managers
- UX and service design professionals
- digital transformation teams
- people responsible for customer journeys
Technical success and customer success are not always the same thing. A system may be technically reliable but still be difficult to use, poorly communicated or frustrating for customers and employees.
ITIL Experience helps professionals understand service journeys, stakeholder expectations, experience evidence, digital experience improvement and the relationship between technology and human experience.
If your role is strongly focused on customers, users, stakeholders or service journeys, the ITIL® Version 5 Experience course may be the most suitable route.
ITIL Strategy: who should take it?
ITIL Strategy is aimed at people who need to connect digital decisions with wider organisational objectives.
Typical learners include:
- IT directors and senior managers
- digital leaders
- technology strategists
- consultants
- service management leaders
- professionals responsible for investment and portfolio decisions
The module covers strategic concepts, digital transformation, the ITIL Strategy Management Model, leadership, innovation, AI governance, risk, portfolio management, sustainability and organisational change.
If you need to answer questions such as “Where should we invest?”, “How should digital capabilities support our strategy?” or “How do we sustain this direction?”, Strategy is the more appropriate route.
See the ITIL® Version 5 Strategy course.
ITIL Transformation: who should take it?
ITIL Transformation concentrates on how organisations successfully introduce, govern and sustain significant change.
It can be particularly relevant to:
- transformation managers
- change leaders
- programme and project professionals
- consultants
- service management leaders
- sponsors of digital change
The module examines transformation models, governance, measurement, learning, implementation patterns, AI-related change and integration with approaches such as DevOps and PRINCE2.
Transformation is also important because it forms part of several higher ITIL designations. PeopleCert states that it only needs to be completed once, even when it contributes to more than one designation.
ExperTrain offers ITIL® Version 5 Transformation training.
What is the ITIL Practice Manager route?
The ITIL Practice Manager pathway is designed for professionals who want deeper practical capability across related groups of ITIL management practices.
The Version 5 structure uses bundled practice modules. PeopleCert currently identifies three areas:
- Monitor, Support and Fulfil
- Plan, Implement and Control
- Collaborate, Assure and Improve
These focus on the practical management activities that many service management professionals perform every day.
According to PeopleCert's current qualification rules, the ITIL Practice Manager designation requires Foundation, one Practice Manager module and ITIL Transformation.
This route may be particularly attractive for service managers and operational practitioners who want to demonstrate practical capability rather than specialise primarily in product, experience or strategy.
What is the ITIL Managing Professional designation?
ITIL Managing Professional is aimed at people involved in the practical management of digital products and services across their lifecycle.
The Version 5 designation brings together:
- ITIL Foundation
- ITIL Product
- ITIL Service
- ITIL Experience
- ITIL Transformation
This creates a broad professional pathway covering the product itself, service delivery, stakeholder experience and organisational change.
It is likely to suit experienced professionals who want a comprehensive operational and managerial ITIL qualification rather than a single specialist module.
What is the ITIL Strategic Leader designation?
ITIL Strategic Leader is designed for people who need to understand how digital technology influences organisational direction and strategy.
The Version 5 route combines:
- ITIL Foundation
- ITIL Strategy
- ITIL Transformation
This makes it particularly relevant for senior technology leaders, digital managers, consultants and professionals who influence organisational strategy.
What if you already hold advanced ITIL 4 qualifications?
If you already have significant ITIL 4 or ITIL v3 qualifications, you may not need to restart the qualification journey from the beginning.
PeopleCert offers an ITIL Managing Professional Transition Version 5 route for eligible professionals, including holders of ITIL 4 Managing Professional, ITIL 4 Master, ITIL v3 Expert and ITIL v3 Master designations.
The transition route is designed to update experienced practitioners on the latest product, service, experience and transformation guidance without requiring them to repeat every qualification individually.
ExperTrain offers the ITIL® Version 5 Managing Professional Transition course.
What if you only hold ITIL 4 Foundation?
ITIL 4 Foundation holders currently have two main choices.
You can take the ITIL® Version 5 Foundation Bridge to update your Foundation knowledge and achieve the current Foundation certification.
Alternatively, eligible ITIL 4 qualifications can still be used as prerequisites for many Version 5 advanced modules, so you may be able to progress directly into an advanced subject without taking the Bridge first.
The best choice depends on whether your priority is to update your Foundation certificate or progress into an advanced specialism.
How are the advanced exams different from Foundation?
ITIL Foundation Version 5 remains a closed-book, multiple-choice exam.
PeopleCert states that the Product, Service, Experience, Strategy and Transformation examinations are open book. The intention is to place greater emphasis on understanding and applying the guidance rather than relying only on memorisation.
This does not mean the advanced exams are easier. They require a deeper understanding of the framework and an ability to use the material in realistic contexts.
Which ITIL module should a service desk manager take?
A service desk manager may find ITIL Service particularly useful because it covers service delivery, support, lifecycle management and operational improvement.
The Practice Manager route may also be highly relevant, especially modules associated with monitoring, support, fulfilment and continual improvement.
If the role includes responsibility for customer journeys and experience, ITIL Experience could also be valuable.
Which ITIL module should a product manager take?
For a product manager or product owner, ITIL Product is the most obvious next step because it focuses on managing digital products across their lifecycle.
ITIL Experience can complement this by developing a stronger understanding of customer and user experience, while ITIL Strategy becomes useful for people moving into more senior product leadership roles.
Which ITIL module should an IT manager take?
The answer depends on the scope of the role.
- Operational IT manager: Service or Practice Manager pathway.
- Digital product manager: Product.
- Transformation lead: Transformation.
- Senior IT leader: Strategy, potentially progressing towards Strategic Leader.
- Broad service management leader: Managing Professional.
There is therefore no need to choose an advanced module simply because it appears to be the “next level”. The most useful qualification is the one that matches your responsibilities.
Should you aim for a designation or just take one module?
You do not necessarily need to pursue a full designation immediately.
Taking one advanced module can be worthwhile if it solves a specific development need. For example, a service manager may gain immediate workplace value from ITIL Service without needing to commit straight away to the entire Managing Professional pathway.
A designation becomes more attractive if you want:
- a broader professional qualification
- structured long-term development
- recognition across several related ITIL disciplines
- progression into senior service management or digital leadership
A practical approach is often to choose the most relevant module first and decide later whether to build it into a wider designation.
